Acute Allergies

Acute allergies are short-term reactions triggered by exposure to allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander. These reactions are the immune system’s immediate response to perceived threats, resulting in symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, or hives. They are typically seasonal or situational and resolve quickly once the allergen is removed or treated. Managing acute allergies involves strategies for quick relief and minimizing exposure, allowing the immune system to reset.

Key Notes for Allergies

Addressing allergies oftentimes takes a multi-pronged approach! Depending on how severe the symptoms are, addressing allergies is similar to putting out a fire. Sprinkling a little water (or a little herbal tincture) on it isn’t going to be enough. You really need to come in strong to get on top of it and then you can back off the supports slowly. It is best to start these supports as the season starts to change. This is often when allergy symptoms start to ramp up. If you can get ahead of the symptoms you will have much less catch up to play.

Acute or Seasonal Allergies

Allergies or chronic hay fever often signal an imbalanced immune system and may require ongoing support or constitutional care with a professional homeopath. These persistent conditions are best addressed with holistic methods that focus on restoring balance and modulating the immune system.

Understanding Allergies

  • Allergies are often triggered by an overactive immune response to environmental allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander.
  • Symptoms include sneezing, watery eyes, itching, and nasal congestion.
  • Allergies can be worsened by a Th2-dominant immune imbalance, which requires consistent modulation to address both acute and chronic symptoms.
  • Individuals can be genetically predisposed to issues with breaking histamine down, and toxicities can exacerbate these issues.

Order of Operations for Acute Allergies

  • Natrum Mur 6x for hay fever and seasonal symptoms; 12-in-1 combinations like Bioplasma for general immune support.

  • Histaminum 30c, see below for other homeopathic recs indicated

  • Black Currant Gemmotherapy, Quercetin spray, and histamine-nutrient combinations like DHIST Jr.
  • Chinese Skullcap, nettle tea, and Bioray Calm & Happy for calming overactive immune responses.

  • Shower before bed, wash bedding frequently, and change clothes after being outdoors to reduce allergen exposure. Using nasal sprays before going outdoors can also help.

Homeopathic Remedies for Acute Allergies

Allium Cepa

Allium Cepa, derived from onion, is a classic remedy for allergies characterized by profuse nasal discharge. It is particularly effective for hay fever symptoms that mimic the irritation caused by chopping onions.

Indications:

  • Flowing, stinging nasal discharge that irritates the upper lip.
  • Watery, itchy eyes with non-irritating discharge.
  • Frequent sneezing fits, especially in warm rooms.
  • Symptoms improve in cool, open air but worsen indoors.

Euphrasia

Euphrasia, also known as eyebright, is the go-to remedy for allergies primarily affecting the eyes. It is also beneficial for non-allergic conditions like conjunctivitis or irritation caused by wind or pollen.

Indications:

  • Burning, watery eye discharge that irritates the skin around the eyes.
  • Itchy, swollen, or red eyes with light sensitivity.
  • Frequent blinking or a sensation of grit in the eyes.
  • Symptoms worsen in sunlight or outdoors but improve in dim lighting or indoors.

Sabadilla

Sabadilla is an excellent remedy for allergies dominated by sneezing fits. It is ideal for individuals who feel intense irritation in the nose, leading to repeated bouts of sneezing.

Indications:

  • Intense, frequent sneezing fits, sometimes up to 20 sneezes in a row.
  • Tingling or itching in the nose, bringing on sneezing.
  • Thin, watery nasal discharge that may worsen in cold weather or damp conditions.
  • Symptoms improve with warmth or warm drinks.

Wyethia

Wyethia is especially helpful for individuals with allergies accompanied by unbearable itching in the nose, throat, or palate. This itching can feel intense and distracting.

Indications:

  • Severe itching in the nose, ears, or throat, often leading to discomfort or irritation.
  • Dry, irritated throat with a sensation of needing to scratch inside.
  • Symptoms worsen in dry, dusty, or windy environments.
  • May also help with an itchy sensation in the roof of the mouth or inner ears.

Dosing In Homeopathy

Homeopathic dosing varies by potency and condition—acute issues need frequent doses, while chronic conditions require less frequent dosing. Stop or reduce dosing as symptoms improve, and reassess the remedy if no progress occurs. Always consult a practitioner for severe or persistent cases.
    • 30C – Mild to moderate symptoms.
    • 200C – Severe or intense symptoms.
    • Dose every 15 minutes to a few hours based on symptom severity and urgency.
    • Faster-onset conditions typically respond faster to remedies. Example: for a Belladonna fever with teething (intense), you would give a dose every 15 minutes for 2-3 doses and expect good improvement. For a Pulsatilla situation (more mild), you would give a dose 3-4 times per day and expect improvement in that timeframe.
    • 2–3 pellets dissolved under the tongue or in water.
    • Improvement: Reduce frequency or stop if 90% better.
    • No improvement after a few doses: Reassess remedy choice.
  • Until 80-90% better

    • Don’t touch the pellets.
    • The remedy is coated on the outside, so dispense into a spoon or the vial lid and put directly into mouth or water if dissolving.
    •  Don’t eat or drink for 5-10 minutes on either side of taking a remedy.
    • Don’t mix remedies with food or breastmilk.
  • Consult a homeopath if unsure about remedy selection or dosing.

Cell Salts for Acute Allergies

Cell Salt Dosage: 2–4 tablets of the selected cell salt dissolved under the tongue or in water, 3–4 times daily during allergy flare-ups. Combination Use: Multiple cell salts can be used together, especially if symptoms overlap. Duration: Continue until symptoms improve, then reduce frequency as needed.
  • Nat Mur is one of the most important cell salts for hay fever and seasonal allergies, particularly when symptoms involve dryness or excessive discharge. It is excellent for balancing water distribution in the body, which is often disrupted during allergic reactions.

    Indications:

    • Sneezing with clear, egg-white-like nasal discharge.
    • Dry, itchy eyes and nasal passages.
    • Headaches caused by sinus pressure or allergies.
    • Worsening of symptoms in the sun or after exposure to pollen.
    • A sense of emotional irritability or sadness accompanying allergies.
  • Kali Mur is useful for allergies that involve congestion and thick, white mucus. It helps clear blockages in the sinuses and promotes proper lymphatic drainage.

    Indications:

    • Thick, white nasal discharge or blocked sinuses.
    • Puffiness or swelling in the face, especially around the nose and eyes.
    • Ears that feel blocked or full, often with popping sensations.
    • Allergies that cause sluggishness or fatigue.
  • Calc Phos supports recovery and strengthens the body’s vitality after repeated allergic flare-ups. It is especially helpful for individuals prone to seasonal allergies that deplete their energy.

    Indications:

    • General fatigue or weakness after prolonged allergy seasons.
    • Recurring allergies that seem to linger without full resolution.
    • Nasal congestion with a tendency toward post-nasal drip.
    • A desire for fresh air, as symptoms worsen in stuffy or warm rooms.
  • Silicea is beneficial for allergies involving stubborn or hard-to-clear mucus. It also helps those who are prone to sinus infections or other complications following allergies.

    Indications:

    • Thick, sticky mucus that is difficult to expel.
    • Allergies that lead to recurring sinus issues or ear infections.
    • Increased sensitivity to weather changes, especially cold or damp conditions.
    • Symptoms improve with warmth and worsen in cold, drafty environments.
  • Ferrum Phos is excellent for the early stages of allergic reactions or hay fever, particularly when inflammation and mild fever-like symptoms are present.

    Indications:

    • Red, inflamed nasal passages or throat.
    • Mild fever or waves of heat during allergy flare-ups.
    • General fatigue or low energy accompanying allergies.
    • Symptoms worsen with exertion but improve with rest.

Dosing for Cell Salts

Cell salt dosing is typically more broad than with homeopathic remedies. Because cell salts offer a more general support, they can be taken more frequently, and multiple can be taken at one time. They can also be taken with homeopathic remedies, allowing 10 minutes in between remedies and cell salts.
  • 6X is our typical cell salt potency

    • Dose every 4–6 hours for moderate symptoms.
    • Acute or urgent conditions may require doses every 1–2 hours.
  • 1–2 tablets, dissolved under the tongue or in water. Cell salts may be taken with food or breastmilk.

For acute issues, doses may need to be taken more frequently (3-4x per day), while for chronic conditions, less frequent dosing (2x per day) is typically sufficient. Adjust dosing as symptoms improve, and consult a practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen.

    • Improvement: Reduce frequency or stop if 80-90% better.
    • No improvement: Reassess the choice of cell salt or consult a practitioner.
  • Continue until significant improvement is noted (80–90% better).

  • Consult a homeopath or health practitioner if symptoms persist or you are unsure about dosing or cell salt choice.

Diet Management For Allergies

When the season begins to change or its the time of year you know you begin to struggle with allergies, it would be wise to be mindful of your histamine intake so as to not overfill your histamine bucket.

You can find low histamine foods HERE.

Lifestyle Management For Allergies

  • Frequent showers
  • Change bedding very regularly
  • Run air purifiers especially if windows are open
  • Keep dust to a minimum
  • Declutter

Herbals & Other Support For Allergies

It is best to layer your supports. For example, taking Settle & Soothe with Histamine Hero provides comprehensive histamine support to address different parts of the body. Also, if you are having intense allergy symptoms you may need to increase dosage for a while when you start.

Electrolytes & Minerals

Replenishing electrolytes and preventing dehydration is important for minimizing histamine reactions. Magnesium lotion and magnesium baths in addition to drinking electrolytes can help prevent this.
